(2) BREAST AUGER USED IN EARLY COAL MINING
Here we have 2 early mining tools called breast augers. This boring tool was used to drill holes for explosives. I am missing the breast plate which is a flat piece of metal approx. 3 inches wide that would be held against the chest of the drill specialist as he manually drilled the hole. The plate had a cup in the center that would receive the auger end and allow it to rotate freely without moving the breast plate. Miner would lean into the breast plate and turn the handle to force the drill into the seam. The screw auger blade would cut into the coal and move material out of the hole as it went deeper. Tip has a sharp end to start the hole. One auger is 102 inches long the other is 97 inches. PRICE $30 EACH
